Technological and economic breakthroughs seem to have led us and our lifestyle into an idealistic era. In today’s revolutionary times, what does Utopia mean? Utopia, apart from being an emblem of idealistic realms, is also commonly interpreted as an unrealistic and purely imaginary goal. Then, where we currently are, is it an idealistic world or just an illusion?

I Am Not There 3:Group Creative Exhibition

This is the third edition of the collective ‘I Am Not There’ held in Ox Warehouse. The first was a bit on the abstract; the second with a more natural approach. This time, we originally planned to do something fancy, and decided to invite artists of different fields such as musical bands and drama groups to join, but the plan was aborted due to practical reasons. In the end we were forced to focus on visual effects.
The first two editions of ‘I Am Not There’ enticed a hot debate toward its meaning, for many would think the title itself was related to Zen and Buddhist concepts. For the latest edition we will not be dwelling on theoretical definitions but will rather focus on the practical and creative sides.
First we let participating artists relate to the first two editions. Then all those involved start planning ‘I Am Not There III’ together, trying to rediscover Ox Warehouse new taking on Warehouse’s surroundings.
To fill the mission, we hiked in group to Mong Ha Hill, just behind Ox Warehouse, from which we could discover the city’s diversity. From the top and from down the hill we see two very different worlds: the hilltop is a deserted place, whereas downhill is a vibrant world – though not very crowded – where folks carry on with their lives. Both represent unique urban landscapes.
Therefore, this time’s ‘I Am Not There’ draws inspiration from the association with urban surroundings, from the utter contrast between its uphill and downhill facets. We display works made from diverse materials, combining city, road and maze, just to rephrase the title: “If I Am Not There, Am I in a Quest?”

This’s Me! – Creative Works by Kit Pond and Kevin Lam

Teaching made me have contact with students who love art. I got to know them during informal ‘hobby’ courses that I tutored, and all of them do not have any formal art education background. But their commitment is no less than those of formal art majors. And they have been in the process of incessant creation over a long term

Kit Pond impressed me in our first contact with his great painting talent. He likes scrawling on his homework books, using a single ball pen to sketch out eerie images infused with imagination and vigor. Yet the fact is that he has never formally studied painting. In his early childhood, during classes, he liked to draw some small, matchstick-men-like figures. Only after his teen years he gradually drew more lines and eventually developed his drawings into paintings with complicated and delicate lines. These images, elaborately composed, are all fruit of long contemplation – each A4 ball pen-painted page would take him more than one month. Kit, like many other young men, was once at a loss towards his personal future development. Perhaps we can say he is lucky enough to finally find a profession in a sector where he can further develop his talent.
Kevin Lam is an IT graduate. He only got into contact with photography when he was about to complete his university degree. He attended several more relevant courses after taking a first photography ‘hobby’ course in the campus, during which he got to know the different types of photography. Starting with a digital camera, he then switched to film and pinhole cameras. After some time he discovered that he really likes touching the film. He took photos with a Lomo-Hogla 120 using film, developed it by way of “e2c” (employ negative film development method to develop positive film) and scanned it afterwards. It turned out that the color is very rich, different from the bluish effects resulting from the traditional development method. Moreover, due to the scanning, images which can’t be produced by conventional development emerge, as a result of the high contrast enabled by computer. The combination of computer technology and film is a perfect combination in this era.

For Kevin, and many other photography beginners like him, capturing subjects seems to be the most difficult thing. To overcome this, Kevin usually take photos at free will. In addition, as using film camera won’t allow the photo effects to be seen instantly, he prefers to give himself much more freedom to take pictures wherever possible, thus composing photos with a bolder approach than in digital photographing. This has givend his film works a bit of experimental flavor. Probably that is what Kevin is.

Ordinary people may think creative drawing is an easy and carefree task, and a kind of expression form that requires little effort. Is that true?
We have invited two local artists Hong (Fan Sai Hong) and Ivy (Ivy Leong) to present this exhibition and share with us their experimental creative fruits collected over some time. We hope it will offer visitors an opportunity to realise how this type of drawing, created with very simple media, can also be very eye-catching and expressive.
They are two different alternative artists: Hong would rather be free and have his own way, indulging in creation irrespective of others’ reaction. Ivy is a different type of artist who does not want to follow tradition and rather prefers to discover her own ways of expression. This kind of persistent and even stubborn creative pursuit is exactly what local artists need most. We hope to see more self-daring artists and sincerely expect that the exhibition Spontaneous Creativity might really help to sow creativity in the sky of Macau, wishing it to flourish.

From Singapore, aspidistrafly is the music & visual project formed by April Lee (b.1984) and Ricks Ang (b.1980). April is an art director, photographer, vocalist and electronic artist. She has a background of study in architecture. Ricks is a designer, composer and producer. He also runs Kitchen. Label, a design studio + record label established by the both of them in 2005.
Their release “The Ghost of Things EP” was widely regarded as one of the best local independent releases of 2004. In 2008, aspidistrafly gained wide attention with the release of their first full-length album "i hold a wish for you" (Kitchen.) and collaboration with Haruka Nakamura on his album "grace" (schole records).
aspidistrafly has also contributed materials for media art performances and installations, most notably collaborating with Takayuki Fujimoto (Dumbtype) and Daito Manabe on “Drift Net”, curated by Singapore-based international performance company TheatreWorks. aspidistrafly has played live in Japan and other Asia Pacific cities. In March 2009, aspidistrafly is set to embark on a 6 city tour around Asia.

A Couple of Forms

Artists Gregory Maass from Germany and Nayoungim from South Korea, present their Artist-in-Residence exhibition at the Ox Warehouse, Macau.In an effort to introduce international contemporary art forms to Macau audiences, the local art space of the Ox Warehouse has invited two artists at the beginning of 2009 from Germany and South Korea, for an “artist-in-residence” program in Macau. Gregory Maass and Nayoungim both graduated from the famous L’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris in 1996 and have been working as “traveling artists” and partners since 2004. Having traveled widely and exhibited in Europe, America, Korea and Japan, the artists have found themselves preparing an art exhibition in a Chinese territory for the first time. During their 3-week stay in Macau, the couple of artists have not only presented a brand new installation exhibition, but have also held a one-week workshop with local artists on the theme of installation art.Frank Lei, art director of the Ox Warehouse and curator of the show, has introduced the artist-in-residence and workshop program with a clear pedagogic intention in his mind. “The art form of installation has been very popular in Macau for nearly a decade now, but in general, people’s perception of it remains vague. So-called “Installation Art” is often practiced here as a mere combination of objects, without consideration to creating a connection of thoughts and feelings between the work and the viewer,” Frank explains. “Through the exhibition and workshop with these two experienced artists, I hope we will be able to share their experience and hence help to develop a more sound attitude towards the creation of forms on the art scene in Macau.”So after two weeks of preparations, the exhibition “You got to be like water” was inaugurated at the Ox Warehouse on the 11th of January. According to the introduction text written by the artists, the title was in fact a quote from an interview with Bruce Lee in which he described how to become a martial art champion. After using the seemingly irrelevant martial arts secret of Bruce Lee as the introduction title, viewers are further led into a world of strangeness. A smoking panda made of six rectangular wooden boxes is installed next to a group of suspended tables and boards. And on top of these hanging objects, are two bigA Couple of FormsGregory Maass from Germany and Nayoungimletters made of neon tubes that can be read as “XO”. Apart from this brief inscription, a hidden sentence can also be read through a combination of social group photos taken from local newspapers. The sentence goes, “BE INVISIBLE”.The whole setting of the art works is infused with a sense of enigma, activating the viewers to participate and guess. But while our Macau viewers are often too eager to decipher visual forms into literal meanings, it would be a misunderstanding if we push it too far. According to the artists, there are not so many meanings to be found. The best they did to offer an explanation during their one-week workshop about installation art was to tell us the anecdotes behind every single object. “We decided to use a panda because during the first three days of our arrival, we saw news about pandas every night on television. And with a bag of dry ice installed in the nostrils, we have made a smoking panda. It’s fun in this way I think.” Gregory Maass explains. As for the methods and experience of their creative path, the artists are more than economical in their words. “There is not much to say. It works, because the form is there.”Indeed, the form is there. And in the language of art forms, verbal words are not a necessity. The articulation of this language is situated among different elements, be it visual or spatial. One of the most pronounced examples in this case is the use of mirrors in theexhibition. A set of three rectangular mirrors was installed on the corner between one of the walls and the ceiling reflecting the giant panda, creating a feeling of perspective and reflection in the rather small space of the gallery. The materials used were all found “in-situ”; in this case mostly wooden objects, thus creating a coherence of visual textures for the viewer. Despite the stinginess of the artists to provide any veritable meanings to what they are trying to convey through their installation art works, their generosity is to be found behind every decision and detail that they have considered in the making of shapes, colors, lightings and space. And the degrees of subtlety and sensitivity applied in these articulations define how skillful and effective this kind of art can be at touching the viewer.So forms have their own language and in the case of an art exhibition, it is often the object to contemplate. The nature of Gregory Maass and Nayoungim’s work is highly demonstrative in exactly this way. But what if we have not yet learnt the language? Where can we start to communicate? For the artists who are concerned exclusively about forms but not pedagogy, this is where it falls short. What is left is just the experience; an “esthetic experience” if you will. You may still remember the special exhibition “Ox Exhibition in the Year of the Goat” during the Chinese New Year of 2003, through which the Ox Warehouse – once an abandoned warehouse unfamiliar to residents - was injected with fresh “art” vitality, exuberant with a unique creativity and viral artistry. The Ox Warehouse has since become a new art arena, gathering artists of different creative media to express ideas and insights. Year after year it has undergone metamorphoses, and up to now it still seeks further developments and challenges, always trying new fashions.
The approaching Chinese New Year of 2009 is a good occasion to get together and thus Ox Warehouse is inviting all the 2003 Ox Exhibition participating artists, as well as new creative people, to fill in different colors at this special occasion and join this re-exhibition, looking at creation in a more free and relaxing way.
As Ox Warehouse is celebrating its 6th anniversary, whether to retrospect or to look forward, we only aim to retain the peculiar artistic atmosphere through diverse display methods.
Our small city is ever-changing and we feel both familiar and estranged to it. Nevertheless we must continue to break free of the routine shackles in order to breathe the reviving vigor. Perhaps, through the interesting and crafted creations and different reflections from you, we can add more fun to life in this ever bustling and complex city. This might be the New Year wish of us all.

What is Installation Art? Why Installation Art?- Germany, South Korea in-residence artist workshop
Although this installation art is very "popular" artistic expression has came to Macao for nearly a decade, but people' perception of it is still vague. The so-called "Installation arts" are just pile of different objects, collage, and portfolio of objects without feelings or connections with audience.
The Ox warehouse has invited two experienced artists to perform in Macao, and organize creative workshops to share their valuable experience with you, and to help local residents interested in art establish better artistic approach through this short-term workshop.

Language insinuates itself everywhere, initiating all kinds of metaphorical readings and misreadings. In the natural history of mankind's imagination, never have so much language, imagery and music been transmitted as today.
The title is a quote from an interview of Bruce Lee in which he was asked how to become a martial arts champion.
We intend to build a schematic route of drawings. These drawings are schemes representing a training system of identities, personalities, idols, characteristics, methods, styles, textures and so on, their interconnectedness, in a lose form of a brick braking competitions set-up, separating life and art beautifully. We will exhibit a willingness to employ all kinds of materials to warp each others meaning into metaphorical status. The show will represent how to become an individual in this foreign territory to which we have been misplaced.

The Ox warehouse season 2008

Ox Warehouse launched its first Theatre Season last year. Taking ‘memories’ as the main theme, a series of theatre performances, workshops and exhibitions were produced.Ox Warehouse Theatre Season 2008 will continue the promotion of “the enhancement of spatial features (of Ox Warehouse), intermix of artistic boundaries, and interaction with the themes of in-house exhibitions”. By inviting local and resident artists from overseas, we will present several performances and workshops tailor-made for the Ox Warehouse venue.

Ten years in a gaze: you have a lot to say and we interpret it for you right away!

Playback Theatre is a kind of improvisational theatre that interacts directly with the audience. After an audience member tells a true personal story or describes a feeling, performers will at once represent it on stage through voice, movements and acting. Playback Theaters now exist in 31 countries around the world. The concept has been well received by many social service workers and educators and is widely used in the fields of education, psychotherapy and counseling.

Founded in 2008, the People’s Stories Theatre acts out people’s personal stories in a dramatic way. Its aims are: to hail every individual’s value within the community, promote social harmony, establish the importance of oral history and foster a better understanding of ourselves and our communities while sharing personal stories. The Theatre deeply believes that the performance becomes a gift, both for those who share it and the society at large. In the process of sharing a story, difference can establish a dialogue; the teller can relive his or her own experience; the listeners can witness other people’s maturing and their endeavors within the community whereby all involved can obtain beautiful memories.
As an exchange activity, The New York Playback Theatre Institute’s graduates have been invited to take part in this performance.

Ox Theatre 2008 Highlight
10-year Return Period
It is a theatrical piece in which a person returns to a play staged ten years before.
According to statistics theory, “Return Period” (also called recurrence interval) means the average time until the reoccurrence of a defined event. A “10-year Return Period” event takes 10 years to come back.
In 1998, despite some obstacles, a play was finally presented. It depicted how Macao people figure Macao and it was composed only of historic fragments.
Ten years later, in 2008, a play is restaged. It depicts why Macao people have to reenact it; it is an old play that cannot reconstruct the past yet it is being remade on a new stage.
Can she fully tell her story in this performance?

House Art Space makes untiring efforts to curate again “Talks and Exhibition - 2008” – Video Art Activities. This programme, like last year, except for the exhibition, talks will be given by participating artists. They will tell about their works and discuss with audiences. It makes us comprehending further the creative concepts, process and experience of each artist, simultaneously, feeling the distinguishing characteristics of “video” from multi-points of view and the unrestrictedly deductive method.Eight video artists are invited to participate in exhibiting their works. Without any central theme being imposed in the show, the participants only use moving images to tell their stories, feelings and points of view. The Old Ladies house Art Space will present on November 15th 2008 a collective exhibition “Prelude to the 10th Anniversary of 1999 Macao Handover” at the Ox Warehouse. The exhibition can be seen until January 19th 2009.
The exhibition features artworks of Hong Kong and Macao artists, reflecting the two territories’ handover experiences, and their impact on residents’ lives, as well as on the urban development, which is always a challenge to human societies.
Drawing inspiration from daily life, the artists will show their thoughts about life and urban development in a creative manner.
The Handover have a special meaning to citizens of Macao and Hong Kong. The handover date is a much celebrated special holiday in both territories. The exhibition, highlighting works that illustrate the cultural and lifestyle changes before and after the handover, intends to offer a retrospective reflection on the transition.
Being produced in 2008 – exactly one year before the 10th anniversary of 1999 Macao handover and one year after the 10th anniversary of 1997 Hong Kong handover – it invites Macao people to reflect on their attitude to life for the coming year.
This exhibition will showcase Macao’s changes in the last ten years, which certainly would have a great significance to all Macao residents, regardless of having witnessed or not the handover ceremony.

Going On – Exhibition of creative works by students of oxwarehouse art workshop Opening :Saturday)4:00pm, 4 October 2008 Exhibition Period :4 October to 2 November, 2008Creation is actually the improvement of the self through imagination.” – a thought by Gukzik, Moon Festival 2008.“Going On - Exhibition of Creative Works by Students of Ox Warehouse Art Workshop” is the wrap-up of the painting workshop hosted by Gukzik Lao, a creative artist from Hong Kong, through which the instructor, together with students from different backgrounds and occupations, explore and experiment with materials. For Gukzik, exploration is basically to place oneself in a strange environment in order to become creative. The feeling of strangeness implies a high degree of curiosity about the environment, like a newborn bady reacting to the world, when everything is new and the impulse to explore strong. During the two-month, six-class workshop, Gukzik adapts the students’ mood to this approach, limiting the study to the materials only. Both in terms of the studies intensity and expected results, it suits well this short-term workshop.“Going On” is an open style painting exhibition through an ongoing creative process. The students can come back every day to rework their pieces, for further development, revision or improvement. At the same time, they are asked to put in writing their thoughts about the ongoing experience, which will become itself an ongoing process, allowing additions, deletions and revisions at anytime.Through this exhibition-cum-workshop, we hope to offer the students a basic training in art, to let them develop their own artistic language and enjoy the highest degree of creation in the process. My concept of the exhibition is about Macau's rapid changes. I would like to find out how the young people are coping with that. So now everyone has a lot to complain, a lot of comments on this and that, generally everything. But nobody actually stands up and speaks out. They only discuss individually.Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to gather all their complaints and put their voices all together to make a noise. The exhibition will be an installation with noises and fake plants.

Self-pursuit– The Explorations of Two Young PhotographersAll begins with dialogue.Dialogues between stories produced by images, or personal languages of photography or even each other’s unique discoveries.Such dialogues bring us on a trip to faraway Brazil, broadening our vision and also enriching our visual experiences. And this kind of effect can be achieved by a camera made from a paper box! Moreover, from these dialogues we may better understand the artists’ creative journeys. Isn’t it very interesting?The first photographer is waving at us from a country afar. Only when we get closer do we realize: eh! it’s Brazil, a land both familiar and strange to us. How does young and vibrant Maria Soares see this Portuguese-speaking nation? Brazil reminds us of Pelé, the King of Football, of Samba dancing and Carnival, and of course of its older big brother, Portugal. Maria, who loves photography, at first observes the country with curiosity yet in a light color tone. By observing Brazil deeply and in a delicate way, she shows a Brazil that looks unfamiliar to us. For us in Macao, this kind of observation, more distinct and focused, is rather urgent. With the media of photography and using her own language, Maria delivers the expression of her feelings, which cannot be interpreted by any other language. Her photos make me remember the road movies of Wim Wenders. They both randomly shoot objects fond during a wandering, but these ordinary subjects beheld in their eyes do encourage our fantastic imagination. For example, the scenes along the road taken from inside a car not only give us a glimpse of some architectural characteristics of Brazil, but also inspire us to observe the very familiar settings in an unconventional manner. This is exactly the key. While today’s Macao gives people ‘a sense of novelty’, we can also try to find a different way to retake this very familiar place. It could be a very interesting exercise.Yet what does the other artist, Si Meng Kuan(Frankie), think of photography as an expression tool?This time she uses a pinhole camera – a kind of unconventional photography apparatus – to discover the secrets of a hand-made gadget through a playful approach. It proves that a semi-controlled camera, if simply rendered with an experimental attitude and a will to discover other expression ways through different perspectives, will certainly give you surprises, making artistic creation so enjoyable and attractive. With a hand-made pinhole camera Frankie takes pictures of some very ordinary and usually unnoticed landscapes and things. Once captured in the paper box, the images become infused with a kind of (strong) expression power, looking unexpectedly different. We are all Macao peopleA multi-angle creative exhibition inspired by neglected groups.
Some would say: “Modern art is difficult to understand, no matter how hard I try”. Yet some others would say, “There’s not much innovation in contemporary art, all has been tried”. But quite on the contrary, some people think that there is still a lot to be achieved in contemporary art and that one can even profit from it, considering the good sales of Chinese artists’ paintings. “If you just get one sold, wow! It can sustain you through all your remaining life.”Is that so?Absolutely. In fact, many people do not understand the relationship between artistic creation and people in the community, which can be used to convey positive messages and inspiration to the general public.Can artistic creation play a more constructive role in contemporary society and culture?As a group of young artists from Macao whose creativity has not yet been manipulated by the market, do we need to do more creative efforts to discover new sources of inspiration and the motivational power of art?This year, the Gallery Ox Warehouse of the Old Ladies’ House Art Space will keep its focus on the integration and exploration of community culture, concentrating on neglected groups of different communities. Through the eyes of a young artistic generation with different backgrounds, we hope to discover, recognize and reflect on the different living conditions of these disadvantaged groups. Meanwhile, through a multi-angle exploration, integration and creation, we will try to find some controversial topics for the general public reflection on some prevalent yet ignored social phenomena. Such creative exploration will give every participating artist a rare opportunity to re-examine, adjust and set his/her own attitude towards creation.We wish to open up extended spaces for creation, which is also Ox Warehouse’s current development direction.

A Retake of CREB Installations’Creation
Installation Exhibition by Performers of CREB: Camp Response Element-Binding
‘CREB: Camp Response Element-Binding’ was premiered at the Macau Fringe Festival 2007. A group of ‘creative performers’ presented imaginative dance movements, creating simultaneously their first installation on a few rooftops, used as artistic venues. What on earth is ‘creation’? This is an often discussed topic. From my viewpoint, ‘creation’ stands for many incarnations, which can be serious, lovely, beautiful, resplendent, ugly, glittering, light, free or oppressive; any incarnation in any creation is always a result of the artists’ choice, judgment and expression, while reflecting their philosophy of life.This story was started by discussions between the performers and me, about installation art and their views and recollections of the city. Despite their experience being focused on the stage performance, during the creation of CREB we explored together a wide variety of different topics regarding artistic creation, the expression of concepts and themes as well as the use of materials, all of which I found personally rewarding. Through this exhibition in Ox Warehouse, we not only try to explore different expression modes, trying to show how the CREB performers look back on and look forward to their own city through their reminiscences. But we also aim to develop further the last CREB performance, so as to offer the artists a space to better express and increase their care and concern for the city.

‘CREB: Camp Response Element-Binding’ was my ‘extravagant’ attempt at the Macau Fringe Festival 2007. Since I missed my childhood rooftops and the old days of the city, I conceived such a performance: audience watch from a distance with binoculars while artists perform on rooftops. But the concept proved very difficult to stage. While thinking about some solutions, silly questions came to me: “why there must be ‘performers’ at all in a performance? Why must we always see ‘something’? Why must we see a performance ‘on a spot’? Can performance just be ‘done’, like recollections of memory?” After elaborating on these, I came up with the idea of a performance about rooftops and memories of the city, without performers or venues.This completely different performance approach is worth of a note: the production team found several rooftops where each performer’s individual act was filmed by the performers, the photographer Bianca Lei and me. Bianca and I then edited the films, while performers moved on to another stage – to create their own installations.On the performing day, the audience did not see the performances on the actual venues (rooftops), but instead the performers’ creation of installations (as an extension of the performance), which drove viewers into a personal feeling of the ambience. Then at night (when the daytime experience had become already a reminiscence) they would see the rooftop performances at home with DVD players (as a substitute for the originally conceived binoculars). Once finished, the performance would thus vanish, just as the former ‘rooftops’, once carriers of some beautiful things, had disappeared from the city’s skyline. The audience was witnessing a vanishing ‘performance’, reminiscent of some feelings about the city which are there no more.This was a ‘performance’ completely different from all my previous ones. For me, it meant lots of fun, as I was able to put some of my very abstract concepts into practice. The whole process was indeed very interesting. It was particularly a high moment to see the performers’ installations. Their dedicated efforts to join my testing of romantic abstractions left me astonished. This was to me a truly tangible ‘creation’, in which I was moved by the performers. Therefore, Kan (Pui Ian) and I design again this exhibition, as a retake of the original creation. The story is yet to start and the fun just begins. If every day in our city and life could be an extensible creation, how fantastic it would be!

Today’s Macau is no longer the quiet, cozy city it once was, attracting Hong Kong people for weekends of leisure. Macau residents have probably taken for granted the recent fast development pace of the city. Yet, viewing from a different perspective, Hong Kong artists may have their own thoughts, memories and feelings stimulated in a different way. They tried to observe the city’s changes from various angles in a fresh yet interesting manner, which might appeal to locals. On one hand, using professional cameras, they deliberately recorded the trails along Macau’s transition – objective, detached yet poignant. On the other, the rapid development of Macau has also stimulated rare and treasurable childhood reminiscences – the artists revisited their former homes, to retrieve old memories bit by bit. Then, combining their personal memories with the city’s changes, they created works of art. The creation proceedings would constitute a valuable reference for local emerging artists.This exhibition “Explore Macau, Feel its Pulse” – Macau in the Eyes of Artists, will not only showcase the rich harvest of the creative Macau exploration trip by various artists from both Hong Kong and Macau, but also demonstrate their creation processes and the outcome of the concurrent workshop, with the aim of giving proper guidance to the local new generation of creative artists.

Under the Lighthouse Multimedia Exhibition

Foreword

A Shanghai reporter once asked me, “Why are there so many vacant beautiful housing in Macau, yet new tall buildings are unceasingly constructed?” She did not understand why a city entitled to the “World Heritage” would leave such houses unattended; is it because they do not have the ‘identity’ or ‘share’ to attract the worldly gaze?

It seems the true content of “Cultural Heritage” is not taking into effect of rejuvenating these ancient housing’s cultures and traditions; let alone sufficient conservation.

I have been experiencing the rapid transformation of Macau’s busiest city center, the Leal Senado Square, for the past years – new branded shops rent out all original antique shops. Cafes that the neighborhood used to hang out gradually fades away, giving way for the march in of branded shops and food chain stores. Old renters are forced to fit in at other subsidiary regions, or simply, shutting down. The city, which could be delicately appreciated through these old shops, has been renovated into a monotonous city blinded with worldwide brands.

Space is the declaration of core authority. The Macau shore symbolizes the arrival of an era of separatist regime, rotating on the axis of economic welfare and authority power under urban developments – breaking away from the ‘civilian’s city’, where citizens are now encircled amongst ‘privatization’ and ‘corporate culture’. Macau’s uniqueness and humanity has been sacrificed for sustainable economic and authority growth. This is the explanation of Guia’s abandonment without mercy, the remnants of a ‘symbolic’ excavation for tourism sightseeing: the visions of oneself segmented by the city’s short sight.

Inspired artists have united to give a shout-out. Under the Guia’s twilight, I reminiscent the many old housing, wearing off slowing in the darkness.

‘Myths of Place’ explores the association between the myths and the realities of people, places and beliefs. In modern usage, “myth” means a falsehood — a story which many believe but which is not true. Myths continue to be created and to penetrate every layer of our society: the economy, politics, humour, mass media, religion, digital virtual world, even our dreams and memories. Myths are forms of symbolic expression, a mirror of culture and social structure, a medium for structure, a projection of the subconscious and a source of cognitive categories.

‘Myths of Place’ will explore the never-ending connection between reality and what is added.

MOVING CASTLE

Many of our childhood lives through fantasies dreaming of sky cities, flying motors, intelligent household robots, glass-constituted architectures, multicolored cities with people taking leisure walks…etc. But, have you ever fantasized these before? When these fantasies fade away while we grow, facing rapid changes under rapid economic developments, contradictions and disappointment gradually emerge that opposes to my own childhood fantasies.

The replication of modern city appearance, standardized glass-constituted architectural walls creates tasteless cities. We can easily capture cities with monotonous scenery as they all have lost its uniqueness and charisma. Then, how are we going to face the city we are living in?

Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei’s rapid development wipes out their past memories, where demolition, renovation are continuously undergo in urban renewals. It seems like an unconscious violence that stretches spontaneously to different corners, environment, culture, values and humanism aspects. Human’s internal feelings involuntarily submit themselves to these changes. Affected by the so-called justified ideology, superseding of old and new architectures, boundless competition amongst wealthy corporate that develop gigantic architectures, high consumption and materialistic lifestyles, fitness advertisement’s hypnosis, pursuing of common identification values, our lifestyles are altered under urban development. Surrealistic developments, superstar advertisements and posters, contradict with the mid century’s religious murals that threaten the minds of the illiterates. Not proportional gigantic architectures that acts like monsters, are step by step destructing the urban landscape. This kind of development speed had forbidden us to learn from the originals, nor to walk past the human touches that had once soaked through streets and alleys. Streets and architecture lost their appropriate proportions, leading to a blindfold of aspiration for modernization. This city standard is fearfully expanding, and unconsciously, we open our arms to this invisible violence.

Journey Tidbit

I had just laid down my luggage after a European coastal city travel. While diligently sorting out my phantom thoughts and memory, I caught sight of two extraordinary stop-over-and-shoot photographs – magically, all the places I’ve been to appear before me once again. I was so excited that I instantly wanted to carry my backpack and tripod to visit these lively and breathtaking landscapes by myself – to appreciate how the photographers’ distinctive expressions are shown through these black and white photographs. This means so much more to me than just series and series of impeccable JiuZhaiGou photography.

I have always love photography and think that a journey will differ if one sets out with a ‘photographic eye’. Just like Ng Sai Kit’s ‘photographic eye’, whose shutter clicks would let people ponder about the effects of herd-instinct photo shooting behavior on photography. The fact that he simply takes photos of authentic stop-over travelers is much more intriguing – what is the significance of ‘traveling’ today? Is it already a different story if ancient scholars and calligraphers who travel high and low to enjoy the sights of mountains and rivers are paste back to the present days? How would civilians feel if they stroll along the shrunken SuZhou scenery? It seems, however, the satisfaction of camera indicates a certain level of cultural pride, where photography or photo shooting has become very important in modern civilians’ daily lives and inseparable cultural bonds.

Another photographer Ho Chi Meng alternatively sought for scenery that had moved him and us – commonly viewed by the public as ordinary scenery has been transformed through his observation; it seems they’ve got something to say. These intrinsic traveling photographs are worthwhile of subtle appreciation, which also carries us back into our own traveling experience.

It also makes me recall of the French semiotics master, Roland Barthe. In his addicting photography agenda “La chamber Claire”, he has once described the photographic scenery that he adored: landscapes that locks his heart to their grounds in which he could exquisitely appreciate; while sightseeing sceneries is just not enough to satisfy his desires.

Sceneries that impulses us to settle down should allow us to chase after our dreams, allowing us to unfold ourselves throughout the free space. It is similar to the thoughts that emerge while appreciating Ho Chi Meng’s traveling photography: Has the silent teenager with his head down in the middle of the lake side been moved by the rippling water? What are the horses’ perception through the levels and levels of metal rods (YuNan)? What is the half-face hidden teenager by the lake side laughing at (Taiwan)? The undersigned coincidence of the vehicle parked near Sai Kung Avenue and the slogan on the wall (Vietnam); Are those bulls at the Portuguese villages for fighting? That photo taken from Tibet naturally recalls a renowned work of H. Cartier-Bresson!

This time, Ox Ware House is honored to have invited two Hong Kong and local photographers to stretch their creativity and experience in Macau. Let’s hope that Macau’s independent creative attitude continue to flourish, leaving traces of profound influences for the vast future. We hope this day can approach us really soon.

Aside from the 2004 and 2005 The Northern District Art Project, Ox warehouse has also carried out a large-scale public artistic activity in 2006 which continue to enable inhabitants to get in touch with art in their daily lives.
We will also cooperate with Northern Region’s residential areas during this Mid Autumn Festival, with dozens of artists and residents together making creations on a lantern structure. We aim to pour in new thoughts and concepts to this tradition. The works will be hung on residential exits where participants and artists alike can also voluntarily discuss about exhibition locations interactively. This activity increases the Northern Region’s festive atmosphere and appreciate artistic beauty at all times.

Concept Synopsis: Each individual is born with unique palm prints, and in all common means of culture, denotes similar significance: irregular lines holds the key to each individual¡¦s indistinct destiny, process of life experience, and stories.
It is also an individual¡¦s guiding map, an abstract mark and also the space involved. Work Content: A collection of over 100 palm prints from 14 individuals of different nationalities, ageand gender, through micro-photo taking methods; imitating landform (landscapes) to remould as thebasic foundation to unfold abstract life paths. Thee Work is divided into 2 sections :
1. Video animation short film: Handscapes Space Variation;
2. Photo : enlarged palm prints presenting artificial abstract landforms which echos with the video recording

Gary Wong, born in 1968, developed his interest of appreciation in arts through childhood television and comics. He also makes attempts in visual arts programs of traditional Chinese painting, watercolor painting and etching etc. He has regretted not persisting into such train-ups and a lack of focus on specializing art interest.
He has developed his interest into the world of (digital) photography, and started “Constant Infrastructure” since 2004. Primarily aimed to shoot memorial photos at visited spots, it has emerged into a series, where photos with exaggerating colors attempt to express scenes of regeneration, documenting the urban changes of Macau under rapid economic changes over the past 2 years.
Wong will continue to extend this concept to his photography in the future, also hope to enhance his photography skills, hand in hand, improving himself while the city blossoms.

Seiji Shimoda is presently the Master of Performance Art in Japan. He has been invited to over 30 different countries, participating in over 120 international Performance Art diverse shows. In his early days, he most performed naked, collaborating with musicians, dancers and video artists. Since 1993, Shimoda annually holds the NIPAF (Nippon International Performance Art Festival) to call for young and old artists to pass down the traditions of Performance Art with a most direct fashion.

This time, taking with him 5 Japanese Performance Arists including Shohei NOMOTO, Kana FUKUSHIMA, Harumi TERAO, Yuri ONISHI and Haruhi TANAKA, together they will perform around China, including Macau, ChengDu, Xi’an, ChangSha etc. Macau is honored to be chosen as the first performance station, fusing Macau and Hong Kong artists to showcase a Performance Art show at the Ox Ware House.

Tatsuya Yoshida, hallowed drummer of the Japanese underground will make his third visit to Macao on April 9 this year to showcase his supreme musical prowess. In contrast to his two previous concerts here collaborating with Keiji Haino, this time he will partner Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple, the Japanese psychedelic space rock band, and bassist Atsushi Tsuyama. As this special combination, they have already toured Europe four times since 1997, stirring up much excitement in the new music circle with the three-people-seven-group extravaganza! As ZUBI ZUVA X, AKATEN, RUINS ALONE, ZOFFY, SHRINP WARK, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR and SEIZAZOKU, the three work their magic in styles ranging from a cappella singing, sardonic improvisation, progressive rock, ethnic music, troubadour poetry to psychedelic space rock. In two hours of high density, extreme intensity improvisatory live performance, they will deliver an experience of pure essential contemporary Japanese new music, guaranteed to captivate any audience.

ZUBI ZUVA X (Yoshida/Tsuyama/Kawabata)Eccentric poly-rhythmic a cappella ensemble. It covers from Gregorianchant to ethnic music, to do-wop to hardcore screaming, heavily usingirregular rhythms and polyrhythm. All sorts of ideas and aberrant musicality overturn the image of a cappella. Their totallymeaningless lyrics and desperate performances throw the audiencesinto the abyss of the laughter and admiration. It makes the conceptof "singing ability” nonsense.

AKATEN (Tsuyama/Yoshida)Formed in 1995 with the motto of "irresponsibleness" and"perfunctoriness." They easily free themselves from the spell of thetraditional seriousness of the art. Using daily commodities like scissors, toothbrush, zipper, camera, and plastic bottle aspercussions, and shouting their brand names over and over as the"songs," the show is performed under the concept of low cost andmaximum sound effect. AKATEN is the experimental convenience store punk band that provides the sound images of cheap and simple dailylives.

RUINS ALONE (Yoshida)RUINS is pioneer of Drum & Bass duo. Tunes are complicated andmysterious, and songs are sung in the language of their own invention. It's high-tension, wild, heavy, speedy, acute, andpowerful tremendous ensemble never sounds like they are only twoplayers. since last bassist left Yoshida still seeking a bassist andcurrently he has been playing as RUINS ALONE. playing RUINS songs with sampling bass. this time Yoshida will play songs from KoenjiHyakkei and Korekyojinn too.

ZOFFY (Tsuyama/Kawabata)Formed in 1998. Zoffy's music hints both at the members' deep musicalknowledge via their improvised performances of troubadour music and European trad, and also at their deep love for rock via theirdestructivist covers of classic rock songs, thatno longer sounds like anything but ZOFFY. The group believes thathumor is essential in music, and their unprecedented performances stray far from the beaten track. Is this the Ultima Thule that rockmusic has long been aiming for?

SHRINP WARK (Kawabata/Yoshida)A new improvising duo consisting of Yoshida from Ruins and Kawabatafrom AMT. group inspired by This Heat and band name taken from their song "Shrink Wrap". Cosmic chemical reaction sound that embraces amultidimensional chaos based upon the principles of minimalism, ananarchistic warping of the time axis, and ultra-accelerated revolving of time particles.

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR (Kawabata/Tsuyama/Yoshida)Acid Mothers Temple have rapidly become acclaimed as the greatest,most extreme trip psychedelic group in the world. Releases haveappeared on labels around the world at an amazing pace, and themagnificence of their live performances is already being whispered ofas legendary. SWR is the AMT Family's most powerful battle-formationyet. featuring Tsuyama and Kawabata from the original AMT and Yoshida from Ruins. their crushingly acute freakout sound willpulverize the world's legions of wannabe psych groups.

Organizers think that arts instructors have made tremendous progress for local primary and secondary arts education. But Macau student’s creativity level is still far behind than those of Hong Kong, Taiwan and nearby regions, as arts education is not truly implemented. Through the hosting of “Macau High School Student Dimensional Art Creation Contest”, it is hoped to open up doors of sculpture arts to local teenagers; also to enlighten their passion in the dimensional arts scene, upgrading their art creation levels and to nurture Macau’s art education development through providing grounds for arts creativity interactions to happen, where teenagers can express themselves artistically.

The “Macau High School Student Dimensional Art Creation Contest Showcase” will be held during 21st January till 26th February at the Ox Ware House (Intersection of Avenida Coronel Mesquita and Avenida Almirante Lacerda), from 12:00 till 19:00 with every Tuesday closed. For the longest of time, the mainstreamindustry was going through a gradual but steady decline, both in termsof ticket sales and the actual quality of the films it was churningout.Something happened about five years ago that marked a turning. AmirMuhammad made "Lips to Lips", a small budget digital video film whichwas shown to small audiences, and suddenly it seemed easy to all filmaspirants. That marked the beginning of what is now a rollercoasterindependent movement.Today, a growing bunch of independent filmmakers are making films fora lot less money than the mainstream, but are receiving unprecedentedattention and accolades from the global festival circuit.To name a few, Amir himself made a film called "The Big Durian" whichwas officially selected for Sundance; Ho Yuhang received Special Juryprizes at Pusan and Rotterdam for his film "Sanctuary"; James Lee wonthe Best ASEAN Film and a FIPRESCI award at the Bangkok Film Festivalfor "The Beautiful Washing Machine"; and for her second film "Sepet",Yasmin Ahmad won the Best Asian Film award at the recent TokyoInternational Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize at the CreteilFestival of International Women Directors in Paris.Even the short films are making a mark. Tan Chui Mui's "A Tree inTanjung Malim" won a Special Mention at Oberhausen, and Azharr Rudin'snew film "Majidee" is quickly and widely-recognised as possibly thebest short film ever to come out of the country.

It is quite interesting now that because of the low cost of DV camera, homebased editing program and facility etc, many more people form varietybackground are making their own features. It was unlike 8 years ago whenApichatpong and I began our career. At that time in order to make film wehave to use 16 or 35 mm negative films. So, early Thai independent featureslike "Mysterious Object at Noon. (directed by Apichatpong and produced byme) was shot with 16 mm negative film. My own directorial debut "I-SanSpecial" is shot in cheap stock of 35 mm. So, nowadays the situation isbetter for those up coming filmmakers to express themselves.

3 Friends is an experimental fiction/documentary film conceived and directed by 3 friends, Aditya Assarat, Pumin Chinaradee, and Mingmongkol Sonakul. They come up with the idea to make a film that comments on the “movie star exploitation” films that are currently being made for the Thai market today. These films, which are mass-produced by large entertainment companies, aim to exploit the current hot movie stars of the moment by purporting to make a “lifestyle” documentary about them at the beach, or hanging out with friends, or going about their everyday life, but done with the express purpose of showing a lot of skin. Thinking this was an interesting starting point, the three friends then contacted the movie star Nakaprapah Nakprasit (nicknamed Mamee), who is herself typecast as sex symbol from her films Mae Bia and Butterfly Man, and proposed this project to her. Tired from her busy schedule as an actress and model, Mamee wanted to take a vacation anyway…

Mingmongkol Sonakul

Mingmongkol Sonakul’s name is synonymous with the birth of Thai Independent cinema having produced the seminal 2000 film, Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s first feature film :Mysterious Object at Noon. In 2001 she was chosen by the French Embassy to participate in the Young Producers from the Three Continents training program held for the first time in Nantes, France. Since then she has produced many other important works including Pimpaka Towira’s 2001 PPP selected ‘s One Night Husband and Aditya Assarat’s award wining short films. She also wrote, directed, and independently financed and distributed her first feature film, I-San Special, which was awarded the NETPAC-FIPRESCI Critics prize at the 2002 Singapore Film Festival. Sonakul has served on the committee of the Thai Film Foundation, the organizing body for independent film in this country, since it’s inception seven years ago.

Aditya Assarat

Aditya Assarat has made several short films and documentaries that have garnered fifteen awards and been invited to screen at over seventy film festivals worldwide including the Sundance, New York, Pusan and Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festivals. In June of 2004, Aditya was also chosen to become the first Rolex Film Protégé, giving him the opportunity to work for one year with the renowned independent director, Mira Nair.

Pumin Chinaradee

Pumin Chinaradee is an independent multimedia artist working in Bangkok. He met Assarat and the two have collaborated on many music videos together. Through his work as the behind-the-scenes director of the Sonakul-produced One Night Husband (Berlin Forum 2003), Chinaradee was inspired by the German cinematographer Christoph Janetzko, and is now making short films himself. His latest project Friendship about several volunteers during the Asian tsunami disaster who became friends working in the face of adversity.

A group of passengers leave Bangkok for an overnight journey to a small town in northeastern Thailand (I-San). He also recorded sound for many independent films. Teekhadet is considered a prominent figure in Thai Independent film industry. Sound often plays an important role in Teekhadet’s films.

In the mountains north of Chiang Mai is a school. And in that school is a community of teachers and students from different tribes, speaking different tribal languages, all living together.
tthe founder of this school, their respected patriarch, is the one who understands these children and knows their dream.
Every mountain child, born and raised in the north with the mountain stream running down the side of their village wants to know where the river ends. As a reward for the students who complete their education, the teachers will take the graduating class to the water’s end. All are poor; some are orphaned, others struggle to learn Thai, their second language, to pass their exams and take their long awaited journey. Their journey isn’t just about going to the ocean, a world beyond their village, but also an internal journey to grow from childhood to adulthood and the choices they will have to make toward that transition.
The story follows three main characters: three children from different villages and how they face their life’s challenges.

Nisa Kongsri
After freelancing as a director and producer of numerous advertisements and music videos, in 2001, Nisa Kongsri worked as an assistant director for the Thai historical epic film “Renaissance” with Film Bangkok. In 2002 she was an assistant director for the Pusan official selected film “One Night Husband” with GMM Pictures. After Areeya asked her to join her to do research about the lives of hill tribe children in northern Chiang Mai, Nisa joined partnership with Areeya to make “Innocence” their first documentary film debut.

Areeya Chumsai
Born and raised in the U.S., Areeya Chumsai graduated with a degree in journalism and having worked with USA Today, The Oakland Tribune and The Lansing State Journal.She was a columnist for varies magazines while teaching a writing course at Bangkok University and Chulalongkorn University in ‘95 -‘97. In 1998, her first book, “PopSpeak”, was published.
In 1999, she became the first Thai female to win the Tokyo Creation Award, in recognition of her social service and leadership. In 2002 went to study screenwriting at NYU. In 2003 Nisa and Areeya were selected to present their screenplay at the Pusan Film Festival. “Innocence” World Premiere is presented at the 10th annual Pusan Film Festival on Nov. 2005.

Azharr Rubin
Azharr Rubin made his ‘proper’ debut in the Malaysian indie-filmmaking scene in August 2004 when “Dancing Kites” screened at the Malaysian Shorts.Thru this film, Amir Muhammad approached him to cut an Indonesian/ Malaysian documentary, “The Year of Living Vicariously”.To date, he has edited two of his non-fiction films including “The Last Communist” which is slated for release in 2006.He was born on November 9, 1981 in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia and he is probably still the youngest filmmaker in what some have termed as the Malaysian New Wave.
His latest project is “The Amber Sexalogy”.

A four-part film that resulted from inventive cooperation between a commercial client and several young independent film makers. The film was made to mark the advent of digital projection equipment in a multiplex cinema. It had to be shot on digital video and the theme had to fit in with the Chinese Hungry Ghosts Festival that took place around the time of the opening: ghosts are said to leave purgatory for a month to move among the living.This is the part by Ho Yuhang.

Wee Lilin

Li Lin is a freelance television producer/director. She has spent a semester in NYU doing “Sight and Sound”, an intensive filmmaking production course. She has done several short films in Singapore so far, three of which have been award winners at the Singapore International Film Festival and two have won awards at American Film Festivals. In January last year the Singapore Film Society organized a retrospective of all her work for members and the public. This event was a first ever SFC retrospective of a local short filmmaker.

The Asian Independent Film Festival----Fantasia Sing-Ma-Thai

The Asian Independent Film Festival----Fantasia Sing-Ma-Thai will be held from the 8th to the 13th of December at the Oxwarehouse. This 6-day festival is organized by the Oldladieshouse Art Space and the Audio-visual CUT Association, and sponsored by the Urban Council of Macau and the Macau Cultural Institute. Some of the most important independent films from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand will be shown in the festival. It is the pleasure of Macau people to have directors of some of the showing films to be in Macau and host a Q&A session for the audience after the show. It is also a very precious opportunity for us to learn about the film situation of these three places. All the films have either English subtitle or are English speaking.

Films shown will include Sepet by the Malaysian director Yasmin Ahmad who has recently been awarded of the Best Asian Film in the Tokyo International Film Festival; 15 by the Singaporean director Royston Tan who has been selected by the Asian Magazine as one the 20Asian Heroes; I-san Special by the Thai director Mingmongkol Sonakul who is regarded as the ‘father’of the Thai independent films.
