From Singapore, aspidistrafly is the music & visual project formed by April Lee (b.1984) and Ricks Ang (b.1980). April is an art director, photographer, vocalist and electronic artist. She has a background of study in architecture. Ricks is a designer, composer and producer. He also runs Kitchen. Label, a design studio + record label established by the both of them in 2005.
Their release “The Ghost of Things EP” was widely regarded as one of the best local independent releases of 2004. In 2008, aspidistrafly gained wide attention with the release of their first full-length album "i hold a wish for you" (Kitchen.) and collaboration with Haruka Nakamura on his album "grace" (schole records).
aspidistrafly has also contributed materials for media art performances and installations, most notably collaborating with Takayuki Fujimoto (Dumbtype) and Daito Manabe on “Drift Net”, curated by Singapore-based international performance company TheatreWorks. aspidistrafly has played live in Japan and other Asia Pacific cities. In March 2009, aspidistrafly is set to embark on a 6 city tour around Asia.

flica is euseng seto , an electro-acoustic artist and graphic designer residing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Born in 1982, he began his music activities in 2005 with his first electronic duo project muxu, whose last offering is released by Monotonik Label (United States).Having realized the need to explore further and experiment with his own music style, euseng seto started flica in early 2007, solely crafting and producing his first album, 'windvane & window' which has been one of the top selling albums in the Japanese electronica scene since its release.

A Couple of Forms


Artists Gregory Maass from Germany and Nayoungim from South Korea, present their Artist-in-Residence exhibition at the Ox Warehouse, Macau.In an effort to introduce international contemporary art forms to Macau audiences, the local art space of the Ox Warehouse has invited two artists at the beginning of 2009 from Germany and South Korea, for an “artist-in-residence” program in Macau. Gregory Maass and Nayoungim both graduated from the famous L’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris in 1996 and have been working as “traveling artists” and partners since 2004. Having traveled widely and exhibited in Europe, America, Korea and Japan, the artists have found themselves preparing an art exhibition in a Chinese territory for the first time. During their 3-week stay in Macau, the couple of artists have not only presented a brand new installation exhibition, but have also held a one-week workshop with local artists on the theme of installation art.Frank Lei, art director of the Ox Warehouse and curator of the show, has introduced the artist-in-residence and workshop program with a clear pedagogic intention in his mind. “The art form of installation has been very popular in Macau for nearly a decade now, but in general, people’s perception of it remains vague. So-called “Installation Art” is often practiced here as a mere combination of objects, without consideration to creating a connection of thoughts and feelings between the work and the viewer,” Frank explains. “Through the exhibition and workshop with these two experienced artists, I hope we will be able to share their experience and hence help to develop a more sound attitude towards the creation of forms on the art scene in Macau.”So after two weeks of preparations, the exhibition “You got to be like water” was inaugurated at the Ox Warehouse on the 11th of January. According to the introduction text written by the artists, the title was in fact a quote from an interview with Bruce Lee in which he described how to become a martial art champion. After using the seemingly irrelevant martial arts secret of Bruce Lee as the introduction title, viewers are further led into a world of strangeness. A smoking panda made of six rectangular wooden boxes is installed next to a group of suspended tables and boards. And on top of these hanging objects, are two bigA Couple of FormsGregory Maass from Germany and Nayoungimletters made of neon tubes that can be read as “XO”. Apart from this brief inscription, a hidden sentence can also be read through a combination of social group photos taken from local newspapers. The sentence goes, “BE INVISIBLE”.The whole setting of the art works is infused with a sense of enigma, activating the viewers to participate and guess. But while our Macau viewers are often too eager to decipher visual forms into literal meanings, it would be a misunderstanding if we push it too far. According to the artists, there are not so many meanings to be found. The best they did to offer an explanation during their one-week workshop about installation art was to tell us the anecdotes behind every single object. “We decided to use a panda because during the first three days of our arrival, we saw news about pandas every night on television. And with a bag of dry ice installed in the nostrils, we have made a smoking panda. It’s fun in this way I think.” Gregory Maass explains. As for the methods and experience of their creative path, the artists are more than economical in their words. “There is not much to say. It works, because the form is there.”Indeed, the form is there. And in the language of art forms, verbal words are not a necessity. The articulation of this language is situated among different elements, be it visual or spatial. One of the most pronounced examples in this case is the use of mirrors in theexhibition. A set of three rectangular mirrors was installed on the corner between one of the walls and the ceiling reflecting the giant panda, creating a feeling of perspective and reflection in the rather small space of the gallery. The materials used were all found “in-situ”; in this case mostly wooden objects, thus creating a coherence of visual textures for the viewer. Despite the stinginess of the artists to provide any veritable meanings to what they are trying to convey through their installation art works, their generosity is to be found behind every decision and detail that they have considered in the making of shapes, colors, lightings and space. And the degrees of subtlety and sensitivity applied in these articulations define how skillful and effective this kind of art can be at touching the viewer.So forms have their own language and in the case of an art exhibition, it is often the object to contemplate. The nature of Gregory Maass and Nayoungim’s work is highly demonstrative in exactly this way. But what if we have not yet learnt the language? Where can we start to communicate? For the artists who are concerned exclusively about forms but not pedagogy, this is where it falls short. What is left is just the experience; an “esthetic experience” if you will. But for the pedagogue, a tangible way has yet to be found, so that artistic ideas are not mere objects of contemplation, but a tool to bring our society to a higher level of awareness and constructive meaning.photos and text by Alice KokQuotation: macau Closer (Feb.)

Ordinary people may think creative drawing is an easy and carefree task, and a kind of expression form that requires little effort. Is that true?
We have invited two local artists Hong (Fan Sai Hong) and Ivy (Ivy Leong) to present this exhibition and share with us their experimental creative fruits collected over some time. We hope it will offer visitors an opportunity to realise how this type of drawing, created with very simple media, can also be very eye-catching and expressive.
They are two different alternative artists: Hong would rather be free and have his own way, indulging in creation irrespective of others’ reaction. Ivy is a different type of artist who does not want to follow tradition and rather prefers to discover her own ways of expression. This kind of persistent and even stubborn creative pursuit is exactly what local artists need most. We hope to see more self-daring artists and sincerely expect that the exhibition Spontaneous Creativity might really help to sow creativity in the sky of Macau, wishing it to flourish.

You may still remember the special exhibition “Ox Exhibition in the Year of the Goat” during the Chinese New Year of 2003, through which the Ox Warehouse – once an abandoned warehouse unfamiliar to residents - was injected with fresh “art” vitality, exuberant with a unique creativity and viral artistry. The Ox Warehouse has since become a new art arena, gathering artists of different creative media to express ideas and insights. Year after year it has undergone metamorphoses, and up to now it still seeks further developments and challenges, always trying new fashions.
The approaching Chinese New Year of 2009 is a good occasion to get together and thus Ox Warehouse is inviting all the 2003 Ox Exhibition participating artists, as well as new creative people, to fill in different colors at this special occasion and join this re-exhibition, looking at creation in a more free and relaxing way.
As Ox Warehouse is celebrating its 6th anniversary, whether to retrospect or to look forward, we only aim to retain the peculiar artistic atmosphere through diverse display methods.
Our small city is ever-changing and we feel both familiar and estranged to it. Nevertheless we must continue to break free of the routine shackles in order to breathe the reviving vigor. Perhaps, through the interesting and crafted creations and different reflections from you, we can add more fun to life in this ever bustling and complex city. This might be the New Year wish of us all.

Although this installation art is very "popular" artistic expression has came to Macao for nearly a decade, but people' perception of it is still vague. The so-called "Installation arts" are just pile of different objects, collage, and portfolio of objects without feelings or connections with audience.
The Ox warehouse has invited two experienced artists to perform in Macao, and organize creative workshops to share their valuable experience with you, and to help local residents interested in art establish better artistic approach through this short-term workshop.

Language insinuates itself everywhere, initiating all kinds of metaphorical readings and misreadings. In the natural history of mankind's imagination, never have so much language, imagery and music been transmitted as today.
The title is a quote from an interview of Bruce Lee in which he was asked how to become a martial arts champion.
We intend to build a schematic route of drawings. These drawings are schemes representing a training system of identities, personalities, idols, characteristics, methods, styles, textures and so on, their interconnectedness, in a lose form of a brick braking competitions set-up, separating life and art beautifully. We will exhibit a willingness to employ all kinds of materials to warp each others meaning into metaphorical status. The show will represent how to become an individual in this foreign territory to which we have been misplaced.

Ox Warehouse launched its first Theatre Season last year. Taking ‘memories’ as the main theme, a series of theatre performances, workshops and exhibitions were produced.Ox Warehouse Theatre Season 2008 will continue the promotion of “the enhancement of spatial features (of Ox Warehouse), intermix of artistic boundaries, and interaction with the themes of in-house exhibitions”. By inviting local and resident artists from overseas, we will present several performances and workshops tailor-made for the Ox Warehouse venue.

Playback Theatre is a kind of improvisational theatre that interacts directly with the audience. After an audience member tells a true personal story or describes a feeling, performers will at once represent it on stage through voice, movements and acting. Playback Theaters now exist in 31 countries around the world. The concept has been well received by many social service workers and educators and is widely used in the fields of education, psychotherapy and counseling.

Founded in 2008, the People’s Stories Theatre acts out people’s personal stories in a dramatic way. Its aims are: to hail every individual’s value within the community, promote social harmony, establish the importance of oral history and foster a better understanding of ourselves and our communities while sharing personal stories. The Theatre deeply believes that the performance becomes a gift, both for those who share it and the society at large. In the process of sharing a story, difference can establish a dialogue; the teller can relive his or her own experience; the listeners can witness other people’s maturing and their endeavors within the community whereby all involved can obtain beautiful memories.
As an exchange activity, The New York Playback Theatre Institute’s graduates have been invited to take part in this performance.

Ox Theatre 2008 Highlight
10-year Return Period
It is a theatrical piece in which a person returns to a play staged ten years before.
According to statistics theory, “Return Period” (also called recurrence interval) means the average time until the reoccurrence of a defined event. A “10-year Return Period” event takes 10 years to come back.
In 1998, despite some obstacles, a play was finally presented. It depicted how Macao people figure Macao and it was composed only of historic fragments.
Ten years later, in 2008, a play is restaged. It depicts why Macao people have to reenact it; it is an old play that cannot reconstruct the past yet it is being remade on a new stage.
Can she fully tell her story in this performance?
